Enclosure No. 2

UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG.

17th October, 1938.

The Hon. Colonial Secretary, Colonial Secretary's Office, HONG KONG.

Sir,

I have the honour to bring to your notice

the following points with regard to the King Edward

VII Scholarships: -

In 1934 our Accountants went carefully into

the question of the utilization of the balance of

accumulated funds to the credit of the King Edward VII Scholarships Account, in the hands of the Govern- ment at that time, amounting to $12,000. The suggest-

ion then made was that these accumulated funds should,

over a period of about ten years, be used up in the

provision of additional King Edward VII Scholarships.

Apart from the accumulated funds the sum

available per annum is £300. It is not possible to

state definitely how many scholarships such a sum will

provide, because scholarships to the Medical Faculty

are tenable for six years and to other Faculties for four years. Taking however the ratio of one 6-years

scholarship to every four 4-years scholarships this means that approximately 5 scholarships can be offered

every three years.

The following table shows the actual award

of scholarships during the past six years. It will

be seen that the proposed increase in the number of

scholarships took place in 1935 and in 1937, but

there has been no appreciable increase in 1936 or in

1938.
